Civitas Honors Program

First-year students who are offered an invitation to join the Civitas Honors Program and enroll at Augustana University may be eligible for a renewable $1,000 Niebuhr Honors Scholarship. Some exclusions apply.

Applications received by Oct. 31 will be reviewed by Mid-November, and the committee will continue to receive and review applications on a monthly basis until the freshman cohort is full (40 students). In order to hold their seat in the program, students admitted to honors must confirm their desire to be placed in the program by completing the online confirmation form via their 电子邮件.

Civitas Honors Program Vocation projects serve as an honors thesis that also speaks to Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s ideal of “vocation:” the calling not merely to a profession but to a life of responsibility and deputyship to others and our surroundings. 而学生的项目很可能是在他们的专业中完成的, it should also address the role of deputyship, pertinence, 正义 and freedom in responsible citizenship. 

Three required elements to a vocation project:

• Independent Learning Experience — the project should represent independent and professional work in the specific discipline in which you are studying. 这可能包括典型的研究论文或报告, but might also comprise an artistic exhibition, curricular development, policy analysis, or musical score. Students will work with a faculty advisor who will help you establish the nature of the project and guide you through its completion.

The Civitas Honors Program is a proud member of the Principia Consortium — a group of 25 college honors programs that offer honors study abroad opportunities through the University of Glasgow in Scotland. While in Scotland, Civitas students take a required interdisciplinary honors seminar on the Scottish Enlightenment and 2-4 other courses that fill their major requirement or serve as electives. Some Civitas students choose to incorporate study or research abroad into their final Vocation Project. With the support of their Vocation Project advisor, students can apply for funding from the Civitas Committee to aid in their off-campus study and research.

Q. What does “Civitas” mean?

A. The word "civitas" is Latin and means “citizenship” — the position of inhabiting a given place and exercising the rights, privileges and responsibilities inherent to that place. Building upon that definition, the Augustana Civitas Honors Program is centered on exploring the nature and characteristics of citizenship at Augustana University, in the United States and as part of a global community.

A. No. The religion and English courses during your first year are already part of the general education requirements. The sequenced courses (CIVT 201-204) may be substituted for any four courses in Augustana's core curriculum. The Vocation Project (CIVT 395) may be done as part of your major; in a number of majors, it can also serve as a departmental honors thesis.

A. Typically, yes. With careful planning, even students in pre-professional majors with heavy course loads have completed the Civitas Honors Program.

Q. What courses will I take in the Civitas Honors Program?

A. Civitas Honors Program students begin in their first year by taking honors sections (labeled CV in the course catalog) of two required freshman courses — Religion 110 Exploring Christian Faith and English 200 The Literary Experience. They then take a sequence of four courses (CIVT 201-204) that speak to concepts drawn from theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s essay “The Structure of Responsible Life”: deputyship, pertinence, 正义, and freedom.
